Luther College Establishes Scholarships in Honor of Alumni Veterans

In 1995, Theodor (Ted) L. Jacobsen ’42, signed the following guidelines for The World War II Memorial Scholarship on behalf of those Luther College men and women who served in World War II and in special tribute to those alumni who gave their lives for their country.

 

This scholarship is awarded each year to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance, with preference given to those students who are direct descendants of Luther graduates who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II.


THE WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

 

     In memory of those Luther College men and women who served in World War II, and in special tribute to those who give their lives for their country in the war, and in recognition of the value of educational opportunities in a Christian environment, and in appreciation of the quality of the academic program provided by Luther College, and with the realization that many qualified students will continue to need financial assistance,

 

      The men and women who attended Luther College during World War II hereby establish and fund an endowment account that shall be known as The World War II Memorial Scholarship at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa. 

 

      The fund shall be managed by Luther College in accordance with the following directives:

 

  1. The endowment principal shall be held in perpetuity.
     
  2. In accordance with the endowment policies established by Luther College Board of Regents, a portion of the earnings shall be distributed each year for scholarship awards and the remainder shall be added to the principal.   
     
  3. The scholarship shall be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance, with preference given to the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II.
     
  4. The first award shall be made for the 1995-96 academic year after earnings have accrued, and awards shall be made each year thereafter. 
     
  5. Contributions may be added to this fund by any person at any time.
     
  6. The agents for the classes of 1942 through 1947 shall be informed annually of the recipients of the awards. 
     
  7. This scholarship fund shall be listed in the college catalog or other college publications.
     
  8. The director of student financial planning at Luther College shall determine the amounts of   the awards and shall select the students to receive them.

In April of 2011, Maynard Anderson ’54, Roy Brown ’02, and Eli Williamson ’02, signed the description and guidelines for The Luther College Alumni Veterans Association Scholarship.

 

THE ALUMNI VETERANS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP

     Luther College has a higher calling--to help students connect faith with learning, freedom with responsibility, and life's work with service.  In recognition of this mission, The Luther College Alumni Veterans Association Scholarship has been established to honor those alumni who have served our country in the United States Military and to provide much needed scholarship assistance to Luther College students who are military veterans or who may be currently serving in a U.S. Reserve or National Guard Unit.   

     All gifts for this endowed scholarship will be gratefully received by Luther College and shall be managed and controlled exclusively by the college in accordance with the following directives:

 

  1. The endowment account shall be held in perpetuity.
     
  2. Each year a spending allowance shall be determined according to the spending allowance policy established by the Luther College Board of Regents.
     
  3. The scholarship shall be awarded to qualified students who have honorably served in the U. S. Military or who are continuing to serve in an active duty status with a U. S. Reserve or National Guard Unit. If there are no current students who are military veterans or continuing to serve in a Reserve or National Guard Unit, consideration will be given to dependents of alumni veterans.  
     
  4. The first award shall be made for the ensuing academic year after a spending allowance has accrued, and awards shall be made each year thereafter.
     
  5. Contributions may be added to this fund at any time.
     
  6. The patrons shall be informed annually of the recipients of the awards.
     
  7. This scholarship fund shall be listed in appropriate college publications.
     
  8. Following consultation with a designated representative of the Luther College Alumni Veterans Association, the director of student financial aid at Luther College shall have full control and discretion over the selection of recipients for the scholarship and the amounts of their scholarship awards. 
This scholarship shall be awarded to qualified students who have honorably served in the U.S.

Military or who are continuing to serve in an active duty status with a U.S. Reserve or National Guard Unit.  If there are no current students who are military veterans or continuing to serve in a Reserve or National Guard Unit, consideration will be given to dependents of alumni veterans.
